Our origin story

It all started when I was a baby and my teeth started to come through, I obviously don’t remember anything from this time but from the stories that my mum has told me this is when I first got eczema. Eczema has run in our family for generations, so it was no surprise when I broke out with the rash when I was only one years old. My mum and nana have lived with skin conditions throughout their lives however their skin always seemed to get better for a few years and then have the occasional flare up. However, my skin has been constantly flaring since that first rash. I’m not going to sugar coat it; it is really hard living with eczema, and it really has impacted my life in so many ways that I never could’ve imagined. I have to cancel plans frequently because my flare ups are that bad, I can’t even put clothes over it, my sleep is so messed up because of the countless nights I’ve had itching, and I constantly have to moisturise. When I say constantly, I mean constantly if I miss even just one day my skin dries out and breaks out in eczema everywhere. Obviously, eczema has impacted my life in more than just these three ways, but these are the most significant ways I’ve found my life has changed as I’ve been learning to manage and deal with my eczema. Some days are a lot harder than others, some days I can’t even move my limbs because my skin is so broken. I’ve lived my life feeling ashamed and embarrassed because of my skin. But now it’s time for a change, I’ve stopped letting my eczema decide what I can and can’t wear, I now leave the house even if my skin is all cracked, broken, and bleeding. No one should have to put their life on hold because of a skin condition and this is why ‘Skin’ exists. We’re here to show the realities of eczema and turn it into a positive thing, we’re here to build a positive community, we’re here to celebrate you and your skin. Your skin doesn’t define you and you should never stop being you because of a rash.
